Byron Shire Council has endeavoured to design this site to ensure content is available to the widest possible audience, on a broad range of browsers and operating systems, including readers using assistive technology or accessibility features. We adhere to web standards and accessibility guidelines where possible to allow for the variety of technology platforms, communication methods, and abilities of website users in the community.

Online accessibility

The Byron Shire Council is committed to ensuring this web site meets best practice guidelines and at least Priority One requirements of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 (WCAG).

Disability Discrimination Act

Australian Government departments and agencies are obliged by the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 to ensure that online information and services are accessible by people with disabilities. There is also the requirement to make online resources accessible to those people with technical constraints, such as older browsers and lower speed internet connections.

The navigation is designed to let all users easily reach the main content categories of the website. Although a multi-level menu is used it is still accessible for users with Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and JavaScript switched off.

Access keys

This site does not use access keys because of inconsistent behaviour across platforms.

Text size

The site uses relative font sizing so users have the choice of setting the font to a size at which they are comfortable reading.

Many links have title attributes that describe the link in cases where the text of the link doesn’t sufficiently describe the target. Links are usually written to make sense out of context. There are no JavaScript generated links. Links to non-HTML files and external web sites open in a new window.

Converting PDF files

The Adobe website provides a service to convert PDF files to HTML via an online form. Visit the Adobe Accessibility Resources website .
