The sand profile is slowly improving at New Brighton and staff are working towards undertaking beach scraping works starting 11 November 2013 – this is subject to weather and other factors such as obtaining licences and approvals.
Beach scraping involves the use of machinery to scrape beach sand from the low tide area up to the sanddune. Building up the dune sand reserves increases the natural buffer the dune system provides against short term coastal erosion and inundation.
Byron Shire Council last undertook beach scraping back in 2010. For more information on the project visit www.byron.nsw.gov.au/new-brighton-beach-scraping .
