Sunrise Boulevard Intersection Upgrade - Ewingsdale Road

Due to wet weather, the Sunrise Boulevard Intersection Upgrade project has been delayed. The date for completion is now 20 October 2017.

Byron Shire Council wishes to advise that the intersection of Ewingsdale Road and Sunrise Boulevard will be under construction from 13 March 2017, to install a new dual lane roundabout. This project is a major piece of critical infrastructure for Byron Bay, and will take time to construct. It is expected to be completed by 20 October 2017 . Hazell Bros QLD Pty Ltd has been awarded the Contract for construction of this project.

The work site encompasses the entire intersection and will be constructed in three stages to maintain two way traffic at all times along Ewingsdale Road. Staging plans are shown below and are provided for information purposes. Traffic movements are indicative only and motorists are required to obey all traffic management controls throughout the work site at all times.

Works Include:

  • Dual Lane Concrete Roundabout
  • Stormwater Network Upgrades
  • Dual Lane Tie In to Single Lanes on Both Approaches
  • Road Reconstruction and Asphalt Wearing Surface to Tie Ins
  • Relocation of Shared Path Crossing to the West of the Roundabout

Staging of Works:

Works will commence on Monday 13 March 2017 for approximately 7 months. The timing of each stage (weather and site conditions dependent) is as follows:

  • STAGE ONE – 13 March 2017 – 15 July 2017
  • STAGE TWO – 18 July 2017 – 5 October 2017
  • STAGE THREE – 6 October 2017 – 20 October 2017

Allowance in the Contractor’s program has been made for major events including Bluesfest/Easter, Splendour in the Grass and Byron Market Days, ensuring works completed during these times do not disrupt the traffic flow any more than is absolutely necessary. It is noted that stage two includes the closure of Sunrise Boulevard for approximately two and a half months, detouring motorists via Bayshore Drive. Traffic at the intersections of Bayshore Drive/Ewingsdale Road and Banksia Drive/Ewingsdale Road will be monitored throughout the project to determine the need for additional traffic control at these intersections.

Construction of this roundabout includes the staging of different portions of the works package, including concrete pours for the roundabout pavement. The concrete pours in particular require ample curing time to gain strength and at these times it may seem that work is not proceeding as quickly as possible, however rest assured the construction program has been developed to minimise disruption as much as possible.

A representative of the Contractor will make contact with residents and businesses affected by the construction works.

Council appreciates your co-operation and patience during these works.

Should you require any further information on these works please feel free to contact Council's Civil Engineer, Mr Joshua Winter on 6626 7074.

The following plans and dates are provided for information only and are subject to change due to weather and unforeseen circumstances. Updates with respect to staging, traffic management and works zones will be provided as required.

Stage One (13 March – 15 July): Works zone will consist of the westbound carriageway (southern half) and the retaining walls adjacent to Sunrise Boulevard. Sunrise Boulevard will be left turn in/left turn out only.
